I’m excited to share a new article I co-authored, published in eLife, titled “Making conferences in the plant sciences more inclusive through community recommendations.” This work grew out of the ROOT & SHOOT Research Coordination Network, where a diverse group of colleagues came together to identify barriers and propose concrete steps toward equity, accessibility, and inclusion in our scientific meetings. We highlight recommendations on:
- Developing community agreements that promote positive, welcoming behaviors.
- Establishing reporting structures and ombudsperson support to ensure accountability.
- Making conference site selection and accessibility more transparent and inclusive.
- Ensuring diverse speaker selection and equitable programming.
It was an honor to serve as corresponding author and to collaborate with such a dedicated team of colleagues. We hope these recommendations will serve as a practical resource for conference organizers across disciplines working to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all.
